RE: Club Newsletter
The 2016 Grand Tour theme is Americana! For more information or to sign up, visit the club site: http://glmc.org/grand_tour.php

The GT runs from April 1 to September 30, and you can sign up at any time. Those who already signed up should have their rally flags tonight so you can get it printed out, laminated, mounted, or whatever you do with your flag. NO FLAGS are being mailed out this year. You must print your own.

Also coming up soon is the off road poker run. There is more information here: http://glmc.org/poker_run.php

The Poker run is happening on April 17th.

New this year, in place of the Dual Sport Adventure Rally, is a social get together and campout, July 30-31. More details about that will be coming soon.

If you would like to be featured in the next meet a member, just send an email to glmcmail012@gmail.com with your answers to the questions below. Answer as many or as few questions as you like [but question #1 is mandatory]

1. forum name - Bill

2. actual name Bill Rufenacht

3. what you ride 2004 BMW K1200GT

4. how long you have been in the club Since 2003 (!!!)

5. officer/other positions you have/had in the club

6. events you host, if any RallyMaster Bonzai 2005 - 2008, 2012

7. events you have won, if any After much thought and consideration, it appears to me that I have won NOTHING in terms of motorcycling 'events' - proof positive that I suck at riding rallies, and the like. This would, in fact, classify me as a huge LOSER.

8. best ride you ever had Motorcycling for me, at it's best, seems to fall in to these distinct classes:

1.) Social rides - rides with friends. The groups range in size from one to a handful. The purpose, destination and duration are wildly variable. Rides in search of a location, or best yet, no location. Heading out for a true meander.

2.) Solo rides. Normally no purpose - meandering about aimlessly, preferably lost some (ok most) of the time.

3.) Rides with a purpose: Riding for Breakfast, Rueben's; the world's greatest bar cheeseburger, and mandatory too many orders of deep fried sides, Pie.

4.) Rides to, or from, an event, such as GLMC, or Team Strange rallies or other gatherings. The anticipation of seeing a small group of close friends that I do not, unfortunately, interact with very often. I was always particularly fond of the ride home from Bonzai, on Memorial Day, with the many small towns decked out in flags, dressed as though they were expecting dignitaries.

I guess I like riding: alone, with friends, good weather, bad - Good Rides? Best Rides? Operative word is 'Ride'. I've had all of these types of rides be my best ride ever. I'm hoping my best ride is yet to come. Perhaps with a grand son or grand daughter??

9. worst ride you ever had Butt Lite IV -- Riding from Utah, beginning around the Capital Reef National Refuge through Las Vegas, Phoenix, Tucson to Tombstone - in August, highest temp I noted that day was 115 in Phoenix. Some incredible scenery wasted on a man with an inactive brain. My mind was elsewhere - I was being hounded by IRS, Department of Labor, stressing about spending money I didn't have available, and not enjoying being par boiled on the bike. Being of Swiss heritage - mountain peoples, if you will - I was truly miserable at 115 degrees in the mid day heat of Arizona. Trying to beat a deadline in to Tombstone. As I pull in to Tombstone with not too much time to spare, I see my friend Daryl Doughty drop his bike at a gas station. I help him pick it up, and as I do, am thinking 'Bill - what the f*** are you doing here???' The most unhappy I have ever been on a motorcycle by far. It would take another couple days, and a miserable ride across most of Texas before I would succumb to the voices in my head and withdraw. Definitely not cool.

10. where you are located [general area ok, such as NW Iowa or central MN, etc] Southern Wisconsin -

11. how long you have been riding motorcycles Since age 12 ... 46 years (this number is truly unbelievable to me)

12. favorite food to hunt for on rides Yes. I enjoy food.

13. favorite locations to ride to/in/around Southwest Wisconsin, Mountains, River Roads.

14. hints/tips for long distance riding Clear your head - in as much as that is possible. Try not to ride when you are otherwise occupied - mentally.

15. rally routing/riding advice See above -- I suck at riding rallies.

16. best gear you have ever worn I have been an evangalist for Brother Goldfine at Aerostitch for almost 20 years. I have worn Darien gear since shortly after it came along. I bought in to the Hi Vis thing very early. Ugly? Well yes - But cagers notice it. I know a number of people that have survived extreme get offs, that have walked away due in large part to Aerostitch gear. The best advice I could give someone regarding riding is to purchase AND WEAR the best gear you can find. There is cheaper gear, certainly more attractive gear, out there, but for me Aerostich has worked very well. End of unpaid testimonial.

I have been around the GLMC and Team Strange groups long enough to have witnessed a changing of the guard - in terms of leadership and participants. I must say that the time I've spent in and on the events with this group has been amazing. I have met some fine people, most of whom have been very kind to me. For the privilege of being trusted with the Bonzai, and the chance to make those acquaintances, I will always be very grateful to GLMC. Safe journey friends. Enjoy your ride.

Peace;

Bill

There were sidecar, convertible, and pontoon rides. If you would like to see this event continue, let us know and we will plan on the event again next year!
