RE: DakAL Trip Planning - Sleddog - 07-29-2017 08:27 AM The route I have planned doesn't follow the DakAL exactly. You can take a look at what I have. Below are links to gdb or gpx files in my Dropbox. There may still be some tweeking so, these are not in stone. When the Dropbox window opens it says the files cannot be viewed. You need to click on Download, then open with whatever program you use to view gdb or gpx. Just trying to stay close to the group.. RE: DakAL Trip Planning - Sleddog - 08-02-2017 12:42 PM I don't have any official alternate places to stay. Hill City the Lantern Inn is a couple blocks away, toward town. http://www.lanterninn.com/ Hot Springs I've stayed at Americas Best Value Inn. https://www.redlion.com/hot-springs I talked to Cheryl at JC Stagestop. She had a single room cancel & has it available for Brian Reynolds. There is still one bed available if someone wants to bunk with Streeter. I dont have a room for the first night and I just found out I have only one bed for the stage stop (2nd night) but, I do have a double room for the rest. So, if anyone needs a roomie let me know. Ill be coming in a day late because of a wedding I have to attend on Saturday the 9th. Bryan Reynolds RE: DakAL Trip Planning - Sleddog - 08-02-2017 01:28 PM There is a short section that we'll be riding through that requires a National Forest Trail Permit. They're available online http://www.blackhillsparks.org/black-hills-national-forest-motorized-trail-permits/ Also, riding through the Custer State Park requires a permit. Those can be purchased when entering the park. RE: DakAL Trip Planning - blrfjr - 08-03-2017 11:44 AM I already ordered the trail permit but wasnt sure about the Custer park pass tho. I'll just get one when we get there. Is it September yet? ![]() RE: DakAL Trip Planning - c-zulu - 08-03-2017 03:28 PM blrfjr, email sent.. (law enforcement) RE: DakAL Trip Planning - c-zulu - 08-11-2017 01:09 PM I think there have been some drops to the "IN' list on the first page.. Yes, there has been a couple drop out. I made some modifications & updated the tracks in post 201.... Clicking on the links to dropbox will get you the updated version There was a 6 mile section that you needed a Trail permit for. I routed around it. If anyone wants to still ride it, that's ok. * RE: DakAL Trip Planning - Abercrombie - 08-11-2017 09:57 PM (07-29-2017 08:27 AM)Sleddog Wrote: The route I have planned doesn't follow the DakAL exactly. You can take a look at what I have. I have always used GPX file down loads in my Zumo 660 when attending road based events and they worked great. I've just purchased a Garmin Montana 680 for this trip that I haven't even taken out of the box yet. What is the best format for loading this map in the Montana? Its time to get the Garmin loaded up, mounted on the XR650 and become familiar with it. I'm getting excited Jack, and thanks again for putting this together. What are you using to load gpx files into your Zumo? I would think the same program would work for the Montana. I'm using Mapsource which isn't supported anymore. Basecamp would be the best & what I would suggest getting comfortable with using. There are a few other guys on here that use & manipulate tracks/routes that can chime in with their preferred programs. Have you installed any maps into your Montana? If not I would suggest getting City Navigator. It's routable & almost all of the roads/trails are shown. I choose not to use Topo maps as they are pretty cluttered with elevation lines etc. RE: DakAL Trip Planning - wbbnm - 08-13-2017 09:05 AM Montanas use .gpx files as their native internal format. You can transfer the files two ways. First hook up the unit to your computer via the USB cable. Depending on what interface mode is selected, the gps will either connect automatically (Serial) or ask you if you want to connect (Spanner). You can transfer the files directly to the unit via File Explorer on a Windows PC. Important: The track and waypoint files need to go to the folder Garmin\gpx on either the internal storage (aka Garmin Montana in Explorer) or a micro SDC card. You can also use the Basecamp Send To command to move the files to the gps unit. This is what I prefer, but for no particularly good reason. The tracks will not show up on the map until you go into the Track Manager and select Show on Map for each one. You can also change the color here. I don't know how Macs work. Oh well. RE: DakAL Trip Planning - ST Rich - 08-14-2017 01:25 PM Looks like we also have a few folks double booking themselves with the Minnesota North Shore Shindig 2017. I should strap my bags on the bike and make sure things are tight. I rode around with Nels Sunday and he was ready to go!!!! RE: DakAL Trip Planning - wbbnm - 08-14-2017 03:22 PM I am one of the guilty double bookers. Looks like I won't be able to make this Dakal ride. I was really looking forward to riding with this group. But I have a couple of conflicts. I do hope to make the Shindig though. I am going to do the Dakal sometime later. So you can scratch me from the "IN" list. Hope you guys have a great ride. BTW I talked to Bill Hearne a week or so ago about the Dakal. He told me that one of the roads in Custer State Park has been closed this year. I thought he said Boles Canyon. But I don't see that on the map. So I think it might be Barnes Canyon road. Hope I don't lose my Rep-1 rating for this wimp-out. RE: DakAL Trip Planning - Sleddog - 08-15-2017 07:48 AM (08-14-2017 03:22 PM)wbbnm Wrote: Looks like I won't be able to make this Dakal ride.
