If a town ends in "ST", we'll call it Bestest, Oklahoma, can multiple business be claimed?

1-Bestest Auto Parts, Bestest Drive-in and Bestest Middle School?

2-Bestest Police and Bestest Fire Department?

3-Bestest Dentist is good for two points?

And... related to #3,
Can Bestest Dentist and Al's Dentist Emporium both be claimed since the are not a chain, even though they are in the same town?

1st street
101st (as in Airborne)
41st

You'll have to be more specific.
I'm not sure what locations you're referring to.

One Dentist per state.

If there is a City called Bestest, it can only be used to claim a point for its name once per state, since you're claiming the City's name for a point.

If there is a location called Bestest Dentist, it would be worth two points. But you could no longer claim Dentist as a point for a location or Bestest as a point for a location.

Just ONE forest per state, OR one National Forest, one State Forest, one municipal forest?

Example: In Ohio,
Wayne National Forest
Zaleski State Forest
Poland Municipal Forest

Once a rider gets these 3 "chains," they move onto the next state if they want any more forest.

One forest per state.

Maybe a good description, for most cases, of the goal in general is as follows:
If the word being claimed is used as a noun in the name location, it can be counted once per state, if it's being used as an adjective then you can use that word multiple times.

I'm sure you're all going to find exceptions to this rule that I haven't thought of.

Helpful, but since I was a horrible English student, I am still trying to get it all right.

First Church of God
First Church of Christ
First Christian Church
First Presbyterian Church

Are these 4 separate locations? I get that once I would get any these signs (worded exactly) I need to move onto another state. To me these are 4 separately named churches...each a point ( but what I think doesn't mean squat!). How would these four signs be scored?

West Supply Co
West Horse Stables LLC
West Local Schools Board of Education Office

Same thing...all 3 good?

You got it.
Those could all be counted.

RE: 2018 Grand Tour Questions - scottheinrich - 01-31-2018 10:02 PM

1st Bank? They pronounce it first bank but the sign is a stylized 1ST.

RE: 2018 Grand Tour Questions - xander84 - 02-01-2018 08:39 AM

That's fine.

Will you be allowing historical markers like these in Iowa?

Yes, those are great examples.

To all of you posting questions this is one of the few items that GLMC does to raise money. Please share this event with all your friends anyway you know how.

Thanks

Wow - I can't believe they still have that POS water tower or that they finally got it into the NRHP. When I was there it was a serious wreck, eye sore, and in danger of falling over and killing people.

You may have to visit when the gates are open or do a "Becker" to get most of those photos. From personal experience, doing a "Becker" there is not as easy as it may appear. The gates may be open in the early mornings or evenings.

Out traveling around looking at signs to get some ideas.

Found a sign in the window of an apparel store "Newest Arrivals are Here" . I presume the sign was made of paper and hung in the window. Is this one good ?

At a movie theater on the marquee in those letters that can be replaced "First Showing" Is this one good ?

Car dealer has a banner in window "Best and Lowest Prices" Good ??

I think my question is asking for a definition of a sign for this Grand Tour.

Willie

None of those would count as they are non-permanent and advertisements. They aren't used for a description of a specific location.

RE: 2018 Grand Tour Questions - UncleLumpy - 02-08-2018 07:14 PM

And so on the historical marker for the water tower in Iowa, if it was labeled "Marston Water Tower" but had the word "first" only in the body of the text, that would count for 1 point? The "ST" word can be contained in the text of the marker and doesn't have to be in the title, correct?

Just checking,
Lumpy

That is correct.

RE: 2018 Grand Tour Questions - gbarker - 02-09-2018 10:57 PM

1. Extending on UncleLumpy's question, if the body of the text included "it was the city's highest honor..", that would not be a point? Because the "st" does not relate to a location?

2. For the Marston Water Tower historical marker, is there a point each for "first elevated steel" and "first engineering dean" in the text of the marker? As well as, a point for the First in First Water Tower (the name of the place)?

(don q, that really is a good example!)

Both 1 and 2 would all count for points for each instance of the "st" word being used in the sign related to the location.

RE: 2018 Grand Tour Questions - JohnF - 02-11-2018 08:32 PM

I find sign "A" in Anytown, OHIO and it has the word "industrialist" embedded in the descriptive text.

I move on down the road to sign "B" in Yourtown, OHIO and find the word "industrialist" again buried in the descriptive text.

Do both of these finds of the word industrialist count?

I am having problems understanding if a common word (or the above example) such as "most" counts EVERYTIME we find it in the copy of a Highway Historical Marker.

TIA, JEF - Cincinnati, OH

RE: 2018 Grand Tour Questions - xander84 - 02-11-2018 08:54 PM

John,

Can you show me an exact example of this for the Ohio towns?

Referring to your other question, yes, if you find different Historical Markers, each occurrence of the word "most" would count.
