No that wouldn't count.

RE: 2018 Grand Tour Questions - JohnF - 03-18-2018 09:29 AM

Just returned from a 3 day (cold) ride with primary objective another GT I am doing. There are a LOT of "st" signs. If I would have stopped for everyone, I would still be far from home.

QUESTION In past GLMC events, signs with arrows pointing to the location did not count. In this ride the objective is not to actually go to a specific location...so, do signs with arrows after them count?

An example would be a sign with xyz National Forest on it, with an arrow pointing in the way one has to turn to get there.

TIA,
JohnF

Simple metal highway or street signage do not count.

Not a good example...a small wooden sign for "Missionary Baptist Church," with an arrow pointing to it or words 2.5 miles, etc. NOT a DOT metal sign, but one put up by the owner's of the "st" word we are claiming.

Asked differently: If a non-DOT metal sign has an "st" word on it, but also has an arrow pointing to where it is...does that count? The clarification being do arrows make a difference in the GT. We are hunting for WORDS not PLACES.

Sure, those are good.

Thanks for the clarification.

So, Willie asked:

At a movie theater on the marquee in those letters that can be replaced "First Showing" Is this one good ?
Car dealer has a banner in window "Best and Lowest Prices" Good ??

You replied:
(02-03-2018 10:43 AM)xander84 Wrote:  None of those would count as they are non-permanent and advertisements. They aren't used for a description of a specific location.

But in the rules you state:
"if you want to find every diner that claims to have the “best pie” go for it."

That completely confuses me! How is a sign stating best prices any different than one that says best pie?!?!?!?!?!?

Sorry, not trying to be confusing.

Willie asked about banners and changeable signs or advertising, which don't count.

If the sign is a permanent part of the establishment, then it is good.

I can't zoom in on the photo.
Every word that ends in "st" on the marker would count as one point, even if the word is repeated.
Just make sure you claim every word/point when you turn in your score sheet.

Is this large enough to read ?

No problem Alex, sorry if there were too many ! and ?. I had a lil bit o' whisky after my inaugural spring ride (randomly spotted 4 signs that count, lol) prior to signing up & posting. This is roughly my 20th Grand Tour from various clubs and certainly the weirdest rules, but I like that! I'm just doing my best to wrap my head around them, but I think I got it now.

Thank you, as always, for running these tours and putting up with idiots like me Smile

If I read it carefully enough and understand the rules correctly, I count 3 points, all for the word "first". Just to help us all understand, what was your thinking on the possibility of 2 points? I get the thought of 1 point (for the main title) but then there are 2 more uses of "first" in the descriptive text, why wouldn't one of them count?

Ok, got one more question for ya. How about churches that contain the name Christ. If they all have different qualifying words, they all count, right?
ie:
First Church of Christ, Scientist
Christ Episcopal Church
Christ The King Church
Christ Community Church
The Church of Christ
Christ the Savior Church

RE: 2018 Grand Tour Questions - xander84 - 04-14-2018 08:12 AM

Yes, those would all count with those exact names once per state.

RE: 2018 Grand Tour Questions - gbarker - 04-14-2018 02:39 PM

Are interpretive signs viewed like the Historical Markers discussions above (previous pages)? Words ending with "st" in the body of the text or title count? In the hires (submitted) version of this photo you'll be able to see "east", "post", "priest", etc. And, I'll include the way-back picture with the bike.

Yes.

I wanted to share this invaluable resource with everyone:
The Historical Marker Database
https://www.hmdb.org/geolists.asp

It lists every historic marker in the world, quotes the inscription verbatim, has a picture of the marker so you know what you are looking for and has the GPS coords so you can cut-and-paste them right into your GPS program or Google Maps!

Now you can figure out if the marker is reachable by motorcycle and if it contains any "...st" words. A perfect pastime for that next rainy day!

Enjoy!

How about the same type of church? For example would First Baptist Church and Christ Baptist Church both count? I'm guessing yes because they both have different exact names. However, Burlington First Baptist Church and Montrose First Baptist Church would not both count.

You are exactly correct, unless the Burlington and Montrose are in multiple states, then they would both count.

RE: 2018 Grand Tour Questions - Babbitt - 04-22-2018 09:38 AM

When looking at a historic marker there is often an st word in the description (first, west, against, etc..). Does the ST word need to appear in the title or just anywhere in the text? For example, this https://www.hmdb.org/marker.asp?marker=98390 "Dakota Rail History in Mayer" contains the word "East". Can I count up the st words in the description or not since the place does not have an ST in the title.

BTW, if you are thinking of visiting the largest candy store in MN, as of 2 weeks ago, the signs were all down for the winter. I assume they will be back up when it opens in May.
