2015 Grand Tour Theme - MikeH - 12-02-2014 10:13 AM

Well its after Thanksgiving. I need some ideas for a GT theme. I've got a couple but haven't done much research into it yet.
Post or PM your ideas

Get us out of the towns and cities.

RE: 2015 Grand Tour Theme - Lapchik - 12-02-2014 04:59 PM

Land forms-hill, mount, valley, forest/wood, point, bluff, etc [exclude water stuff because of affair with water gt]

Only double L towns since I passed up a bunch of those this year?

Animals [Eagle Grove, Elk Pont, etc]

Towns with people names [Harlan, Blair, Brandon]

I think I suggested this last year, but North/South/East/West

RE: 2015 Grand Tour Theme - Lapchik - 12-02-2014 06:14 PM

Shooter is probably chomping at the bit and drooling over his laptop [with mapping programs up and ready]

Road Kill. That's as far as I got.

Roadkill?

Can you provide a list of previous GT themes? That way we don't duplicate ideas.

You have mail

For Farmer Smile

How about making it hard to map...take out the use of "towns" and do Farms or Ranch names....pictures of the sign, gate or mail box in front of a farm or ranch, a painted name on a barn, etc.

PIE!

I understand that's been done. But I'd go for it.

Cemeteries

Motorcycle Shops

Motels (can't be part of a chain)

Campgrounds

Diners and Drive-Ins (Diner must be part of the name of the establishment and/or no chain drive-ins)

I agree. I don't have a solution to this but I visited the Twin Cities several times last summer on my bike but did not do many GT bonus location because I despise riding in city traffic.

Do we want lots and lots of possible locations or do we want something that is more difficult?

American Legion & VFW would be lots of them everywhere and easy to score. Pretty easy to find and route.

North, East, South, West could also include towns that start with NEW. Not as many. still pretty easy to score.

Animals would be fun, tougher to route more complicated to score.

.

Airports, airfields, aerodromes. Lots of those out and about.

Could also include air museums, and even any aircraft used as a "Gate Guard" or memorial.

What the heck is an Aerodrome? Do they keep zeppelins or race bicycles and motorcycles there?

How about train stations? There are plenty of cool old train stations around, might be fun to hunt for them.

How about everyone submit up to 25 places they want to go or at least places they want to photograph along with GPS coords and description of how to get there and what to photograph? Can't use your own places in GT. Email list places to Mike and he posts them on the Garage after he OK's them. Mike can add as many additional places as he see fit to keep riders in all areas busy.

I like the idea of train stations, farms and stuff. Maybe even old court houses in towns that start with a P, I or E have it be the "Courtin' Pie" tour! Make it double points if your picture shows you eating pie in front of the courthouse!

Or maybe post offices....we've been avoiding them for years....why not embrace them! Smile

An aerodrome is a gentleman's airport. They are in secret, sequestered locations, that only gentlemen know about.

They could be worth extra points, double if you get a shot of the blimp or zeppelin, or treble for a picture of a steerage passenger being used as ballast.

I have often thought of court houses too, mainly because some of them are pretty darned cool. I don't think there are enough if we limit it to P I E, maybe G L M C P I & E. Plus looking at them, the name is not always displayed on them (http://iowacourthouses.blogspot.com/). Anyone have other ideas on how a court house theme could be used?

RE: 2015 Grand Tour Theme - texnmidwest - 12-06-2014 06:45 AM

Very true Frump! A lot that DO have the name displayed may be on a sign too small to be seen from the street. A couple options but maybe not as intriguing would be fire stations or police stations. But those are not nearly as wonderful as those old courthouses.
G L M C P I E & B A C O N? Smile

Great link to Iowa court houses! Thanks for sharing that with us!

"Tools of Freedom GT"

"American Legion & VFW would be lots of them everywhere and easy to score. Pretty easy to find and route."

...to make it a harder MUST include some type military hardware in the photo.
(tank, chopper, artilery, etc)

OR

Gun Shops - Must say "GUN" on the sign

You could try places listed on the historic register. The NPS has a nice database with over 90,000 locations.
