Okay I'll chime in....

What do a Harley and an FJR have in common?

And I try not to camp much anymore....hotels are cheap.

Well, this thread has derailed . . .so here goes the insults!!!

Cruise control is put on those bikes because their driver's can't concentrate on more than one thing at a time.
One carb? Yeah, biplanes worked in WW1 for the dread baron and all, but we evolved in technology and made faster machines.



Anyway . . .suggestions on sleeping bags? I've heard big agnes bags are great, but how much are they really worth? Seem waaaay too expensive or are they truly worth their weight in precious metals?

I have a Mummy style and regret it. I never camp when it is cold anyhow. It is more important to me as to how small it packs.

I have a mummy style and love it.

Unfortunately, this is where that ol' personal preference thing kicks in.

You're not going to know until you've tried - so take the least expensive option, try it out, if you don't like it, sell it on for not much of a loss and move onto a different style. Only way to be sure. I do like camping when it's cold out - down to about mid 20's at the lowest at night roughly, as an indication.

I sleep on my side in the fetal position (fear of ....) mummy style does not let me sleep like this.

That's an important piece of info, in fact. I can see why a mummy style would not work for you.

I sleep on my side, which is why a decent air mattress is good. The thin sleeping pads aren't much good for me.

I use a rectangular Cabelas down 20 degree bag.. Lots o movement and very warm.. Packs down to nothing, but it wasn't cheap..

I've had the pleasure of being frozen in a crappy sleeping bag, with no place to go to get warm, praying for the sunrise so it'd be warm enough to get a nap..

Now, I use the down bag on top of me, and a 20 degree Apex Climashield underquilt under me in my hammock.. With the rectangular bag opened up and tucked under me, and the underquilt keeping me warm from the bottom I'm a happy camper..

That's the problem.. I spend too much time in hotels.

I can set up my hammock in less time than a tent and air mattress takes, and I'm more comfortable. The gear takes up the same amount of room and I don't have to worry about tent poles.

All my gear, including clothing and extra stuff was in this bag on the back of my bike at the Guzzi Rally.. No tankbag, etc, and I had room left over. And that's a small top case..

I'm a side sleeper too. The Big Agnes bag is "semi-mummy", surprisingly more room than a regular mummy.

I don't mind sleeping in 20 degree temps....It's the getting up part that sucks!

Well, most shelterhouse posts are about the right width, and the straps that I carry give me options from 10' to 30' wide. I really don't recall camping anywhere other than the eastern side of Colorado that didn't have trees that would work.

My camping hammock has a ridgeline that runs from end to end to keep a 30 degree sag for proper hanging.. You can hang from rafters just as easily as a tree, too..

I've slept in a homemade hammock in my house for the last 4 months.

I'll have to ponder this, as well as cry a little before can reply.. I've dealt with a couple "Bah"s and an occasional "WTF" but an official Poo Poo, with a Silly Thing kicker is more than I can just pass off as mere gobbledeegook..

Sir, unless I receive 3.29% of an apology for your comments I will be forced to place a leaf in your helmet which will irritate you for miles until you're forced to to make an unscheduled stop and remove it..

Yes, I'm afraid it has come to this, but only due to your hurtful comments about my sleeping utensils. And I will warn you right now, that if you dismiss my warning and continue to belittle me, I will be forced to exchange the leaf for a small pebble which will cause chafing and irritation. This is as hurtful to me as it will be to you, as I normally refuse to touch another person's property..

An apology of 18.6% or more will please me to no end, and I will be forced to buy you a slice of PIE!!

I leave this matter in your hands. I hope the hostility will cease between us and we will be able to return to only spitting at each other when we meet.

Also weird, but an entertaining explanation about hammock camping..

Nothing wrong with tent camping (except the way Prop does it) but hammocks are another option.. I like hammocks because I don't have to find level ground and I don't have to find clean ground, because I'm not on the ground..

At the MN BMW Rally I actually hung right over a small spring that made the ground on the back half of my campsite saturated.. I just stepped over it when setting up and made sure I didn't step in it when getting up to take a leak during the night. But other than that, it didn't affect me at all, as I was sleeping 3' above it.

At the IA Guzzi Rally we had a nice heavy rain all Saturday afternoon, and I actually had two other people sitting with me under my tarp, chatting, enjoying a beer or two and watching it rain. I had taken two hiking poles with me to prop up one side of my tarp, basically giving me a nice porch to sit under, completely dry.
