2020 GLMC Grand Tour Q&A

RE: 2020 GLMC Grand Tour Q&A
I can't really read the sign that Lapchik posted, but it doesn't look like it would count.
There are a ton of these sponsored and memorial road sections, it almost seems you can't go on a ride without seeing a sponsored road, but the theme of this tour is Scenic Byways and Highways, which are designated by the state or nationally.

Maybe in the future, whoever does the grand tour can do a memorial highway tour.
However, since the goal is to get out and ride and have fun, I don't want to discourage anyone from riding these roads.

So, to repeat, there is no harm in submitting the road at the end of the season, even if you're not sure about it.
If you submit a road that isn't accepted, at least you likely still had a nice ride regardless.

ETA: In case anyone missed it, there are also links to a large amount of acceptable roads at the end of the rule sheet which is attached on the first post of this thread.

Just for the sake of conversation. I don't plan on claiming these, but here's a better picture. Click to enlarge

Thanks!

For the sake of conversation, that would not count.

You coming to the hare scramble next weekend?

RE: 2020 GLMC Grand Tour Q&A
I completely forgot about that. I have my kids on the weekends but I'll see if I can make it happen. Trailer has a destroyed hub/spindle so if I can make it, I'll do it iron man style. Ride there, ride event, ride home.

Edit: Just heard back, it's a go. See you there.

Question on "Qualifying Photo" Contents
I am fully COVID vaccinated and am jumping into the Grand Tour this weekend.

Late last year I did a bit of scouting that generated a question. It pertains to where the Michigan DOT has decided to separate the Scenic ByWay and Highway Markers.

[Image: Separate_Signage.JPG?width=570&h...;crop=fill]

These are the two signs separated by several miles. If you check the MI_BYWAYS_BOOK, it is Route 11 -- M23 is the Sunrise Coast ByWay.

So, do the markers all have to be on the same pole, or can I represent the picture with just M23 and whatever the DOT has decided is noteworthy, since the highway reference (M23) is designated by the state as a byway?

Roy...

PS. I am okay with searching for an all-together sign post if needed, but would be a bit bummed if I rode the 200 miles without an "all-together" sign post.

Are you asking if you need to get a picture of both of those signs for the one on the left to count?
If that is the question, then no, just a picture of the sign on the left would be acceptable.

If you're asking if getting a picture of only the sign on the right would be acceptable for claiming the MI byway represented by the sign on the left, then no it would not count. Getting a non-descriptive sign only counts if descriptive signs do not exist for the claimed byway and it is at either end of the byway or within the stretch of the claimed byway.

The descriptive sign and the numbered highway do not need to both be claimed or included in an entry, the descriptive sign is the one we're looking for in the photo.

Let me know if I'm not understanding your question.

RE: 2020 GLMC Grand Tour Q&A
Xander, You mean the one on the Right, that has the Route Number on it, don't ya?

The one on the Left has just the Scenic ByWay marker -- non-descript. No way to know what road I'm on. You guys would be too trusting to let me get away with claiming that was on M23, No?

They do put them all together at times:

OK I misunderstood.
I think see what you're asking now, so Michigan has multiple byways with that same sign and some of them don't have the Byway sign along with the specific numbered sign.

In that case, yes you can submit multiple pictures of the descriptive sign and the numbered sign, they don't need to be on the same pole.

Am I understanding correctly now?

Thanks,
Alex

RE: 2020 GLMC Grand Tour Q&A
Okay -- Got it. I'll look for an "All-Together" sign post, but if not, I will make a Compound Picture to claim something like what I find on M23.

Thanks, and sorry to get confusing. I blame the Michigan DOT.

You weren't confusing, I'm just easily confused.

Have fun!

I don't think I got that far south in the last Iowa buffalo. The one I posted was over by Cub foods in Alexandria, MN.

One of the Rhode Island scenic roads is Route 102. This is the beginning point for this scenic road. Is this pic OK or is more needed. Rhode Island does not sign their scenic roads.

Yes, that would count based on your description and per the rules.

From the rules sheet:
" If for some reason, a descriptive sign does not exist, the only acceptable alternative are street/road intersection signs that exist at either the beginning, end, or within/of the byway section of road. "

In the rules for this year submission may be made by "digital photo gallery". Can you clarify what that means? Would a Google Photos album suffice and me sharing the album with you? Or a shared link to some other cloud site?

Yes a Google photo album or other cloud shared album works.
Just need to label the photos as you would on other types of submissions so I know what's being claimed during scoring.

RE: 2020 GLMC Grand Tour Q&A
Hello riders,

Just a reminder, that the submissions for the Scenic Byway Grand Tour are due by or must be postmarked by September 30, 2021.
If mailing a CD or USB drive, then they need to be postmarked by Sep 30 at the latest.
I'm also accepting digital photo albums.
In all cases, please include some type of list or spreadsheet with all of the locations visited and any explanations for claimed points if necessary, along with your photos.

Thanks,
Alex

Alex,

My CD Drive seems to want me to throw it in the trash as it doesn't want to burn a CD-R or CD-RW. (Plays Music CD's just fine.)

Can you suggest a Photo Album Provider, or perhaps take a ZIP File emailed to you with my submission? A ZIP is 10.5 MB, but can delete a 10 MD PDF map of Michigan's Scenic Roads to make it a very reasonable size.

I can send a small ZIP file right now. Or find a Photo Album Provider (and hope I can upload an Excel file to augment my submission).

Google drive and Onedrive both allow the saving of any file types, including spreadsheets and photos and the files can be shared.
You can also email a zip drive or multiple if necessary.
Either will work.
Thanks,
Alex
