RE: 2023 Grand Tour General Discussion
I live about 200' from a track and I see mostly garbage graffiti, but some of the train cars are incredible and should be taken out of service and put on display. Something I noticed is the really good graffiti will not cover up the information on the car, like id numbers or weight ratings. Covering that is basically a guarantee that the rail company will paint over it.

I will admit I like the art produced by some of the notorious likes of Banksy and Shepard Fairey, and have watched more than a couple documentaries on "guerilla art". There is a bridge back home with my name on it by spray paint and scratched in with pocket knives and rocks in more than a couple places, but it's a rite of passage. There are dates on that bridge all the way back to the 60's.

Pretty likely I won't allow graffiti/street art/tagging. Two main reasons are that sort of thing is not usually done in a safe/accessible/well lit area, and I don't want to promote the negative aspects of art.

A potential exception would be the public art walls that some cities provide to reduce graffiti. Sioux City had one for a while that was used by some truly talented people, but it was taken down after gangs got into territory fights with it. I just keep thinking it's too hard to prove that it is an approved location for this event, so again, likely no graffiti.

I think I would have to word it something like:
-Murals must be an obviously legal or commissioned work, or a private property painted by the owner.
-Non-commissioned illegal street art, general graffiti, gang tags, or works of questionable origin should not be submitted.
-The mural must be 64 square feet [6 square meters] or more. An easy comparison is that this area is the same size as two sheets of plywood. You could also measure the mural by estimating if it is around the size of two touring motorcycles or larger. I won't do digital forensics to measure them, so just use good judgement and remember this event is for fun.

RE: 2023 Grand Tour General Discussion
Are commercial murals that advertise the business permitted. Examples might be Coca Cola, large mural that has the logo of a pub on the side of its building, etc etc

As long as it is a painted mural and not a printed billboard, yes it counts.

RE: 2023 Grand Tour General Discussion
So anything displayed on a wall (product sign, company name, artistic image, etc) is OK as long as it is painted. If the "image" is painted on to plywood sheets, and the sheets bolted to the wall, are these acceptable ??

Must be hand painted with artistic, decorative intent.

Remember, it's for fun.

Medium does not matter. Spray paint on brick, latex paint on plywood, whatever.

RE: 2023 Grand Tour General Discussion
I have just returned from a road trip to visit our daughter and her family (about 2,000 km round trip). Along the way, my wife and I "practiced" hunting for large murals in the small country towns we traveled through, and here is one that caught our attention.

I have (of course) recorded it's location, and the other murals we found, and will pick them all up "officially" after the GT starts in January.

Got this idea for a possible future rally theme while I was out riding.
Visit towns and cities that end in "-burg", "-ville", etc. and start with G, L, M, or C.

Example:
Greensburg acceptable, Pittsburg not acceptable.

Just putting it out there before I lose track of the idea.

Ride safe.

That was the theme in 2009. Villains tour.

Very well could have. There isn't a lot of info on the history at the bottom of the GT page for that specific tour

It is 02-Jan here in Oz, which means that it is the 01-Jan in the USA.

The significance of that statement is that the 2023 Glacial Lakes MC Grand Tour is now underway.

Good luck everyone, and "Game On" !

Now that I'm registered and in the GLMC forum, I'd better add another Aussie participant's post. It's very quiet here, considering the number of Riders listed, and the fact the Rally is entering its 4th day (for you Americans- it's ended here).
Tomorrow I start- made the "flag" up today, including a way to hold it on the bike, even in a wind.

To be fair, -12*C and another 17 cm of snow on top of what you already had on the ground, is a reasonable excuse not to get out of bed, let alone not ride your bike. Big Grin
