Interesting question.
I did a quick Google search and found this definition. Graffiti art is done ad-hoc, un-paid for, and sometimes un-wanted by unknown artists on public buildings, often with spray cans and including written slogans or propaganda in graffiti genres for the community; whereas Murals are a specific work of art by an artist, generally commissioned and wanted by a building owner.
