RE: 2023 Grand Tour General Discussion
Yep. Well done. Now I've got "Flag envy". As you can see, the number on mine is much smaller. But the Adjudicator says he can read it OK, so it'll do.

Got another one today. I’m trying to figure out how to post a picture directly in here. See if this works.

Will this qualify.

While this would appear t be graffiti or street art, it's a location about an hour from me called Ruins Hall https://www.ruinshall.com/

Privately owned but they allow tagging and street art with approval. Constantly changing the the piece shown has already been painted over.

That specific picture, no = no GT flag.

That location = yes, but only once. If the art changes that doesn't change that it's the same location.

RE: 2023 Grand Tour General Discussion
Biggles's photo and description of "owner approved" street art opens up another question.

My local Town Council has 4 designated "legal graffiti walls" located on Council owned land, typically sporting fields. The Council website states that these walls are designated spaces for creative outlet and experimentation by street artists. They were first trialed in 1997/8 and in 2010, the Warringah Graffiti Management Plan was adopted by Council, incorporating these legal graffiti walls.

See https://help.northernbeaches.nsw.gov.au/...fiti-Walls

Do these also qualify ?

For the record, there are 32 legal graffiti walls in Oz, and over 80 in the USA.

RE: 2023 Grand Tour General Discussion
From the rules:
● Murals must be an obviously legal or commissioned work, or private property painted by the owner.

Nobody is going to graffiti advertise for a motorcycle ride, so that one was obvious in addition to the fact they mentioned it was a legal wall. If you mention "legal wall" in your submission information, chances are very high I'll accept it.

To quote Sleddog, "Submit them all and let the Rally Master decide" if you are in doubt.

The reason I, (and perhaps others) need to be sure of a "mural's" validity is in some (many?) cases, getting your bike into the photo, or even getting the photo can be very challenging.
I'll anticipate the response that we're not meant to put our lives on the line for a photo, but there are plenty of possible entries that invite a bit of risk to make the shot. Hence why bother if it's of questionable acceptance.
All that said, I expect we'll all settle down soon having had many satisfactory explanations.

DownUnder, That's very cool. The pic from Ruins Hall that I posted is a similar situation. Old factory that burned out years back but the concrete parts of the structure remained. Eyesore for the small town and a potential safety hazard they tore out all of the burnt stuff and retained the concrete forms and lower walls. Property was purchased by a neighboring tavern and made available for use for street art. Artists must meet the tavern owners and are given an area to paint. Nothing obscene, racist, or not family friendly. The site is used for photo shoots and a Arts & Brewsfest every year in June.

That photo was from last Spring and the artwork has already changed. Same wall 2 weeks ago.

I am not the RM, but if the artist must meet with the Property Owner and get their permission, then that mural should be acceptable.

What I am finding is that some building owners and town councils are using mural to protect from graffiti attacks, but the "protective" mural is painted in a graffiti/street art style. This makes it difficult to determine if it is an approved mural or just more graffiti.

But as the RM has said, "if in doubt, send it in" and he will decide.

If my 3 year old grand-daughter paints a multi-coloured "post modernistic" mural on my garage door, with my wife's permission, can I claim that as a valid bonus Big Grin

That should count double, but I didn't put cute kid art in the rules for this year.

Also...13 hours to drive 490 miles. Not a great pace, but the last 180 miles back home were snow drifted and sheet ice.

Also also, it's already got dirt on it from a quick ride before trailering home.

That's definitely not a Honda oil patch. Must have been a Triumph or HD there before you! Angel

I'm surprised they had any oil in the parking lot. This place is basically spotless inside and out. Probably something that fell off my Ford Taurus haha

RE: 2023 Grand Tour General Discussion
Alvin's service was one year ago. His last rally involved a lot of murals, and was the inspiration for the Grand Tour this year. I have the feeling he would have liked this GT, "going 100mph in the wrong direction" as he used to say.

RE: 2023 Grand Tour General Discussion
There are a lot of Alvin stories out there.

I know someone here will have the flat tire during a rally story, but I can't remember it well enough.

This happened about seven years ago during a quick boat test drive. Engine was off/in gear, and it must have rolled over the engine and ended up floating out into the lake until the trailer jackknifed and stopped it. He got a nice Tacoma after this.
