Concours Valves

Has anyone adjusted valves on a Concours? (Mike H, LSGiant, Alvin) Just wondering how involved the process is, and also how much it might cost to just have someone else do it for me.

Don't worry about it until 25,000 that is the euro spec. I had mine done at 40K first time still in spec.

There is a slight tapping sound when the bike is cold, wondering if it was caused by synthetic oil or if it was valves. Noise seems to go away after the temp comes up.

I've done mine 3 times in 50,000 miles. The second time, about half of them had gotten tighter than spec, so I checked them again last winter because I was afraid the valves were wearing a lot. It turned out that they didn't change that time. So, mine have been a bit unstable.
As far as the job goes, it pretty much sucks because there is so little room between the frame and the top of the motor, and it's full of electronics. Our flat rate manual says it will take 4.4 hours ($330). If they don't need adjustment, it would be about $75 less. Kawasaki recommends doing the first check at 15,000 miles, for whatever that's worth.

Get used to it, if you didn't want clicks and noises you should have bought a Honda. Mine did have loose exhaust manifold bolts fixed with locking nuts.

Factory 3 year unlimited mileage, plus I bought another 3, put in the earphones and turn up the volume.

I wouldn't be too worried about it. Valves are supposed to make noise, especially when its colder.
Did my check at 22,000 last winter 15 out of 16 where out of spec, can't remember which way but I can look. It isn't difficult to do, just very time consuming, like Alvin said there is alot of crap in the way.
I took some vibration measurements of my 08 with 37k mile before I sold it. I had also planned to measure my new bike after about 5k and also right before and shortly after my shim adjustment at 22k, never found the time to bring the equipment home from work. I was looking to see if I could quantify if some were out of spec enough for me to tear into the engine. Bike has 45k on it now so I'll likely be checking the shims again this winter, hopefully I'll have time to do some vib measurements this time.

92,000 and I have had to adjust 3 valves, 2 were just barely out of spec

13 K16 GT 19000 still in spec never adjusted at first check

48,000 miles on the Connie and one fuel pump due to me putting a dirty fuel cell on.

I never did hear what the repair bill was when you picked your bike up after the BBE ?

About $900 for a stator and clutch dampener....but no valves....lol

New tires this weekend so that will be about another $600... rear tire is balding but I couldn't let it go in till the Grand Tour is over.

Damn those Harley tires are expensive only a little over 400 for Connie tires, but yours probably last longer....

I was only getting 7000 or so out of Harley Dunlop 407's. I have been running Dunlop American Elite 3's for the last 4 sets of tires. I get about 12,000 to 15,000 out of a set. The front I could get 20,000 out of but I just change them both every time. The $600 also includes an oil change.

I'm going to get very good at adjusting valves I bet. I bought another Sportster this summer.



From what I've been told Ironheads need their valves adjusted every 3000 miles or so.
