RE: DakAL Trip Planning
So I know I am an FNG, but I have a question about the dates and trying to coordinate this ride with an interested friend. He lives in Spearfish and usually goes by "bigjohnsd" on FJR forums and definitely sounds like he is interested in joining this group ride.

My question is, the ride is scheduled from the 10th to the 15th so does that mean I would need to arrive the 9th, the day prior and return on the 16th, the day after, or is the 10th and 15th already the arrival and departure dates with actual DakAL riding on the four days of the 11th - 14th?

I'm just starting the planning process and trying to determine whether to unload in Hill City, or in Spearfish, and ride down with John to the starting point in Hill City.

I'm sorry if I am pressing for too many details too early, being such a new guy on the block.

RE: DakAL Trip Planning
Arrive on the 9th, riding on the 10th - 15th. The dates picked were to enable travel to & from the Hills on Saturday.
Don't be concerned about asking too many questions too early. That's what this thread is for, discussions!

RE: DakAL Trip Planning
Thinking about the expense, 6 days of riding, meals, motels, fuel.the trip out and back from home.Need to start saving up for this.

$1,000 ? $2000?

any good estimates?

You are being led by Jack. It will be an experience of a life time. He will have you eating filet mignon on fine imported china and drinking Dom Perignon from leaded crystal glasses most every night. Lunches will be catered "in the bush" and have different theme every day. Your breakfast will be served in bed. The resorts where you will be resting your head will have fine Egyptian cotton sheets with a thread count of no less than 1800 because anything less than 1800s chafe Jack's delicate fanny. I think you'll need a least $1000 a day but it will be so worth it.

Dust sucks so I'll lead.

I can pull it with the dually but we can't fit 6 bikes in there if I bring the beast ;-) We had a KTM 990 and an F800 in the bed when I was pulling a 7x14 with V nose with 2 GSs and an FJR on the way out to Denver last year though. so regardless we can take more bikes than people.

The Dually is a 4 door so it's quite comfy for 4 guys my size. We had 4 guys on the over night drive out to Denver and it was perfect... OK 3 would be better so the back seat could be a bed!

Let's put it this way I can easily fit an FJR, Wing, Intruder and the WR with room for gear Big Grin

I haven't tried it yet but I think I can get my Rambler in there Wink

Wherever I may Roam... I wander...

RE: DakAL Trip Planning
Lodging I think it can be done for $50 - $60 each, dbl occupancy. Food is pretty reasonable at the places we'll be, local cafes & restaurants etc. Normally b'fast & dinner are sit down meals. Most mid day lunches will be something trailside or while fueling.
$100 per day should cover expenses.

That group is a little big for my liking.

A friend and I plan on being there at the same time. Hopefully we'll be able to meet at dinner a time or two.

I would think it is doubtful that we will all ride as one big group. If you need help it sure is nice to be part of the group. Sad to find out your week of riding was scuttled when one of the guys in the group down the street had the part, knowledge, connections to get you going.

Have no interest in the motorcycle show itself.
There does appear to be several participants that are planning on the Jan 14th meet and greet at Merlins.

I usually make the show every year and have tentative plans of arriving early afternoon on the 4th and staying in the cities over night. If I'm going solo I'm up for meeting, if friends or the wife decides to come along, all bets are off.
