Local [non-chain] ice cream/candy shops/bakeries
Libraries and/or museums
Local Cafés [non-chain]

Regarding libraries, have a Grand Tour of Carnegie Libraries.

Every state but two have 'em, and most still stand.

Heck, some still function as libraries...

Probably not many of them in Canada or Australia. Also, the STFU-MC [other Watertown motorcycle group] did that theme in 2019.

RE: 2024 Grand Tour Speculation
I dunno...

How about restored old train stations?

Bonus if there's an old timey grain elevator next to it.

Or has someone already done that?

We did Planes, Trains, and Automobiles last year. Very very very few train stations were turned in.

Only other idea I got is drive ins, could do both restaurants and movie, but I found, by diggin' back in the archives, that drive ins were kind of a theme back in the teens...

RE: 2024 Grand Tour Speculation
While we are discussing the 2024 Grand Tour, I would like to suggest we allow the Rally Master (whoever that may be) to also participate in the GT.

I do not see that the RM has any particular advantage over the other participants. Obviously, they would not be able to score their own submission, but I am sure that a willing volunteer could be found to do that task.

Perhaps this could be discussed and a decision reached at the 2023 Annual Meeting in November ??

Given the GT is time bound I think knowing the rules in advance of everyone else and be able to see results ahead of the deadline are certainly advantages.

RE: 2024 Grand Tour Speculation
The Rules for the 2023 GT were announced about 3 months prior to the start of the GT, so I don't see that the RM had an advantage here.

Unless a list of specific bonus locations is published, like they do in the IBR, then no one knows where any/all the bonuses are, so I don't see that the RM has any advantage here either.

As for the RM seeing the results beforehand, this can only happen after a rider submits their bonus photos. If this is a concern, then a participant could just delay submitting their bonus photos until the last day of the GT.

Personally I have always disliked that rule. The only way it would be an advantage is if someone like John Frick was the RM...He is always in the top spots because he is retired and rides ALLOT!! Anybody who has been in charge of the GT in the last 10 years it wouldn't have mattered.

RE: 2024 Grand Tour Speculation
I've suggested it before - "The Tour of Duty"
Veteran's of Foreign Wars, American Legions, and other Military related parks/monuments/museums.

1 point for the location, 1 bonus point for a piece of military equipment at that location (tanks, helicopters, artillery pieces, etc.)

NO ACTIVE MILITARY INSTALLATIONS - Taking photos outside a military base will allow you to quickly meet Military Police! However, there are lots of museums on military bases that you can request access to, and most are open to the general public if they go through the process of requesting a visitor pass.

RE: 2024 Grand Tour Speculation
That's already an AMA sponsored event: https://www.tourofhonor.com/

Good to note the active military installation thing though. Same treatment if you try taking pictures of jails or state penitentiaries. While it is legal to do so, [at jails] you will almost certainly be talked to. I work next to a jail and when we take pictures of our facility they have heavily suggested we try to keep their buildings and impound lot out of frame.

RE: 2024 Grand Tour Speculation
Most important before picking a theme, who is running it next year?

Unused themes from last year's thread.
---Scavenger hunt. A list of general items to get a picture of, with a G-L-M-C town name requirement and/or only one list item per town. Bonus points for getting one of everything on the list.
---Larger than life. G-L-M-C town names and pictures with statues of people/animals/objects that are sized obviously larger than they would have been in real life.
---Showtime. Local live performance theaters, movie theaters, radio stations, and drive in movie theaters.
---Sugar rush. Candy stores, ice cream/snow cone/frozen treat places. Mobile carts and box trucks ok also? No major chains like Dairy Queen, Cold Stone, or Baskin Robbins. Could probably add in the major manufacturing plants for the candy, as some give factory tours with samples.
---Living in the past. Museums, native population heritage sites, historical town preservation sites [everyone there pretends it's 1880 or whenever for education and amusement].

RE: 2024 Grand Tour Speculation
As posted above we need a Tour Master

How about somebody owns it. Bill's Cafe, Bob's Bar, Sue's Nails, etc. Has to have proper name.

It's not a competition, It's a demonstration. "Rowan"
