Bonzai Question
Sharon and I are sitting on the fence about riding the Bonzai.
The fence being if we should because we are helping Nels and Mary with certain parts of the rally. Our help consist of taking entries, lining up morning snacks and registration. We are not helping with bonus locations or points for bonus locations. I know rally masters can not enter their own rallies. So we wanted to get some opinions from fellow riders as to if this would be proper for us to ride or not. Dave |

RE: Bonzai Question
Depends on if you are getting volunteer points? Just a thought.

RE: Bonzai Question
My thoughts would be if your not involved in any way with that part of the rally and don't have any access to that part of the rally before anyone else, then you're not serving as a Rally Master and the Rally Master rule does not apply. The final decision should then rely on the event's Rally Master's judgement. If he feels your duties give you any advantage over other riders then he should ask you not to ride.
Nothing in the rules says that a volunteer can't not ride, but the Rally Master is responsible for making sure everyone has a level playing field. If you ride, you should not be eligible for volunteer points. My opinion though is just that, just my opinion. I would like to hear what others have to say. |

RE: Bonzai Question
I've entered the Bonzai rally this year, and it certainly doesn't cause me any heartburn if you're allowed to enter. I don't see how you have any advantage with the duties you have taken on. Final say should be the rally master of course.

RE: Bonzai Question
My opinion, for what it's worth, ride. You gain no advantage with the pre - rally tasks you are taking care of.
And, thank you for volunteering. |

RE: Bonzai Question
I wouldn't have a problem with you riding. However, if you would happen to win, there very well may be some questions as to the integrity of an assistant rally master competing.

But we don't have an "Assistant Rally Master" this year that I know of. OK, maybe that is little argumentative. I think of the Assistant RM as the person who agrees to help the rally master with all parts of the rally including scouting, proof-reading, and scoring. If we stop allowing people who help with registration and accommodations participate, there are a lot of folks who won't be able to participate... not that I plan on winning a rally any time soon. |

RE: Bonzai Question
I'd say as long as you don't know anything more about the bonus list than the other riders it doesn't matter. If you win and someone gets upset about it they can help out at the next rally or stay home.

I am just hanging out in your world so here are my worthless .02ยข... taking registrations and setting up snacks doesn't give you an advantage in my eyes.
Hope you ride. If it's not reproducible, it didn't happen. |

Sort of agree with the sentiment, however if the club is taking money from people to enter, some consideration needs to be given to potential fall out. Just writing off complaints will lead ultimately to further reduced participation - or at least that is a risk. That is also my 2 cents, and about of as much value. And here is another 2 cents of mine - you have paid the money and entered (and won) a rally, you're as much a member of the club as anyone else, and to me your opinion as important as anyone elses. So there. As a similar newcomer to the club, I certainly hope my opinion counts for at least the 2 cents I give it myself. So if something was to go to a vote for say, I don't believe I would count. If it's not reproducible, it didn't happen. |

RE: Bonzai Question
Thank You for your input. As it turns out I have decided to become more involved with the rally and will not enter as a rider. Sharon and I were looking forward to having a shot at being the first team winners.
Guess some other lucky group will have that honor. Dave |

Thanks for helping put the rally on Dave, the work you and Nels are doing is very much appreciated. That probably doesn't get said enough. :thumb
