RE: Any thoughts on what the Grand Tour Theme is
I can finally poke my head out from the rock I've been hiding under.
Real basics of the rules that I just sent off to get posted on the webpage: The tour this year will consist of two type of locations: generic and specific. The rider will choose the generic location while the specific locations are chosen by the Rallymaster. Each state can have up to five generic locations with each location used only once per state. Generic Locations 1. Murals a. Painted art people make on the side of buildings or other structures in a town 2. County Courthouse a. The name of the county needs to be visible in the photo 3. Veteran's Memorial a. This could be a statue of a soldier, monument to a battle, or vehicles 4. Race track a. Bike, dirt track, Nascar, horses, etc. The name of the track or sign of the entrance of the track needs to be in the photo 5. Something cool or important to the rider a. This can really be just about anything, an interesting story would be great too In order to claim the generic bonus, a rider needs to label each with the state & nearest town. This will help with scoring and can be done by labeling the photo or including a separate list. Specific locations can't be used for generic locations. If we specify visiting the Simpson's mural in Oregon, you can't also claim it for your Oregon mural. Specific locations will be announced at a later date (Plan for end of February). Expect about 2-10 specific locations in each state. The northeast states will be lower due to their proximity to each other. Each location is worth 1 point Mike GLMC #371 TeamStrange #744 IBA #475 |

You mean this Simpson's mural, in Springfield? 44.046333 -123.0196 And this place is only a couple of blocks away: 44.0455 -123.0202 Springfield OR is indeed the inspiration behind the Simpsons hometown, and the Moe's above likewise. It's pretty nondescript outside but the bar inside is like the show's. Matt Groening, the Simpsons creator, is from Portland. In case anyone ever thinks of going there. |

Sounds interesting. If you need some ideas for the Carolinas, let me know.
Regarding the towels - I understand that not doing them makes it easier logistically. That being said - I really like rally towels. I've kept every one of mine and am planning on displaying them in the garage. Would it be easier if towels were printed with the logo, but no rider #, and the rider had to add that themselves? RE: Any thoughts on what the Grand Tour Theme is
A rider needs to score 20 points to be considered a finisher.
Of course Bart would know what I'm talking about, he's probably been to most of the places we've found. *Spoiler* The Simpson's mural is on my list, likely will be a specific location. The cost of shipping all the towels & the time to do it was an issue. The post offices around me close at 4pm weekdays and are only open for a couple hours Saturday morning. I didn't want to raise the entry price either. You can take the graphic and print it on anything you want, so if someplace would put it on a towel... Mike GLMC #371 TeamStrange #744 IBA #475 |

Great format!
Also, nice cliff hanger; give us some information and still maintain the suspense. In your helmet no one can hear you sing. IBA#61520 |

Liking the format... researching may be a little more difficult, but that is all part of the fun. Couple of questions on the Generic 1> Can one find 5 racetracks for a state and get full credit ?? 2> On the 5. Something cool or important to the rider ~ does this have to a be consistent theme through out the season or can the theme change. With the snow finally coming (I gotta get out of this place) (hey that could be a theme ~ a town or place named in a song). can honker down and start the planning cycle. I like the format. It will take a little more in depth research, or just being familiar with the area, or (gasp) interacting with locals.

For midwest & western states it should be around 10 per state. Northeast will be closer to 5 with a couple maybe only having 2 or 3 (I'm looking at you CT & RI). There will be no specific locations in Hawaii. Mike GLMC #371 TeamStrange #744 IBA #475 |

RE: Any thoughts on what the Grand Tour Theme is
I really like the format Mike has for this year. Its a bit more work for him, but it's more interesting. There should be about 15 points per state (at least in the upper midwest). The General (Generic) POI locations should be pretty easy, so most of you will be able to get the first 5 to 15 points easy depending on how many states you live near. The rest may take a little planning. Those living in the middle of states like Texas and Alaska may have some additional planning and riding.

And....we're live!
http://glmc.org/grand_tour.php Thanks Frump! Alaska will be the only state with 20 points available within its border. If anyone signs up from Hawaii they are SOL. My tentative plan is to have specific locations made available the week of 7March. Likely email & post on the webpage. Mike GLMC #371 TeamStrange #744 IBA #475 |

This is a very well thought out GT. More work for the scorer(s), but it is a very flexible scheme, and challenging while also appealing to all types of rider. Well done everyone involved in its creation.
I just found out about it and signed up immediately. (02-11-2016 07:05 PM)Don Q Wrote: I like #5. Plan on using Delta Diner for WI. Let the planning begin. Wise choice. It is an important and popular fact that things are not always what they seem. |

RE: Any thoughts on what the Grand Tour Theme is
Thank you for organizing what looks to be another fun season of riding/scavenging!
One question: do they have to be current active courthouses used for that purpose, or are historic courthouse buildings now re-purposed for some other reason OK? thanks! Steve |
