RE: Dual Sport Event (Glenwood, MN)
Honestly 80-90% of the scenic tour I'm thinking of I could do on my goldwing. 100% if I was brave or peer pressure was involved.

RE: Dual Sport Event (Glenwood, MN)
Plan is early June, guided dual sport ride in the Glenwood/Sunberg/Spicer area.

Will be an all day event [200-250 miles] starting and ending in Glenwood, MN.

Nothing crazy as far as terrain goes. About 40% paved, 50% gravel, 10% dirt road.

There will be a lunch stop, and then after the ride there are a lot of options for food in Glenwood. Maybe I will have my smoker built by then too, who knows.

I have plenty of room for [tent] camping at my house, but not much flat area for RV's.

This event will be held out of Sunburg, MN [with 2-3 GT locations along the route]. Here are some scouting pictures.

RE: Dual Sport Event (Glenwood, MN)
Official dates are August 7 and 8. Ride will start before lunch on the 7th, with a food stop along the route.

What I am envisioning is two options, and letting everyone choose the day of which they would like to do:
1) group ride led by me, with planned scenic and Grand Tour stops, pace set by group
2) GPX and paper maps provided, and ride at your own pace

This way the people who want to really stop and smell the roses can do so, and the people who want to get the miles down with minimum stops can cruise right along. There is a public park [non-camping type] right behind the house with a public restroom. There is plenty of space for tent camping in the back yard. There is also Monson State Park a couple miles away for fishing and camping. I hope to have my smoker built and tested soon, and I also have a gas grill.

The regular campout should be mid-late July [I think]. With everything that had been cancelled last year, I'm really excited to have two of these laid-back style events so we can all catch up. I miss my moto friends.

Chances of more than burgers and brats at the night before the ride meal are looking good....

RE: Dual Sport Event (Glenwood, MN)
We might need to rename this the Minnesota Wildlife Safari. I rode 30 miles tonight, and lost count of how many animals I saw.
Canadian geese [hundreds of them]
Mallards
Loons
White tail deer [several dozen]
Redwing blackbirds
Swans
Pelicans [hundreds of them]
Dragonflies [millions of them]
Some sort of loch ness....I mean Terrace Mill....monster. Either an otter or huge carp
Turkeys [about a dozen]
Raccoon
Cows
Goats
Frogs
Eagles
Hawks
Snapping turtle

Ran out of beach, got stuck climbing out. Nice quiet boat launch, but not on the route. Did find a two mile long dead end that WILL be on the route tonight too.

RE: Dual Sport Event (Glenwood, MN)
****If no RSVP/interest by July 23 the event will be cancelled****

220 miles total

3 Grand Tour locations

50 feet to the first GT location [byway]

71 miles to #2 [overlook]

146 miles to #3 [overlook]

Two bonus historical sites on the route

9-10 AM start time [I like to sleep]

71 miles, then gas/lunch [no gas stops the rest of the ride]

I'd really appreciate knowing if anyone plans on attending so I can set plans to either lead a ride or be with my kids that weekend. I can also send out a .gpx file for those with schedule conflicts so you can ride whenever you want.

RE: Dual Sport Event (Glenwood, MN)
Test ran the last 1/2 of the ride. Two roads are closed with no sneaky work around, but I did find a really nice minimum maintenance road detour. Saved a turtle, and saw 3 bald eagles, about a dozen hawks, cranes, pelicans, mallards, turkey, and deer.

One of the closed roads was actually a national wildlife preserve, and the road is "visible" but ends after about 1/4 mile at a private fence.

I made some changes to the first half of the route, which I will be test running Sunday along with the second half again if the weather is nice.

There is now a 2nd gas stop, but I would still suggest hauling spare gas if you are on a small tank dual sport. I carry 2 extra plus my 3 gal main tank. More details after I pre-run the route Sunday.

I will be documenting the ride in case anyone wants to ride it at some other date/live vicariously. Extending RSVP deadline through the weekend.

RE: Dual Sport Event (Glenwood, MN)
At this point, I have to say the event it postponed. Not cancelled, but postponed until fall. I had only one person interested until just now, but I had already changed plans with the ex so I would have the kids that weekend. I am documenting the ride and "tour guide" notes so that it can be done at any time in the future as well, like the TSDAT or Filthfest/Fifthfest. Stay tuned.

RE: Dual Sport Event (Glenwood, MN)
Would Sept 18 or 19 work?

Route is 225-250 miles, and with the speed I average [including scenery stops], should take 8.5 hours plus stops for food/gas.

To bring a thread back that's been inactive over a year...

I would be willing to lead this ride if anyone wanted to do it this year. There are also gpx files if you want to do it on your own.
