2014 Grand Tour Theme

RE: 2014 Grand Tour Theme
Finally took a real look at the GT today and it appears more challenging/fewer locations than I'd thought. Had wondered but now definitely "in."

Plus, my son is moving to NYC for work so now I have an excuse to go east and play on JohnF turf.

I can tell some areas are lacking in double letters. I feel for y'all! I lucked out this time.

Why no LL? Sure I understand to not allow the "Ville" towns. But all the LL that are not Villes seems a bit much. There are many towns that other past Grand Tours have hit. Are these going to be excluded as well?

Snowy.

RE: 2014 Grand Tour Theme
Not accepting any LL towns makes it more challenging, requires riding many more miles, rewards efficient routing. That sounds more like a GT (or, the point of it all) to me, but then to each their own. Myself, I'd rather struggle to reach 200 locations than have that many within an easy day ride of home.

Nope just no LL, if each year there is 150+ towns in each of the bigger states (mn,wi,ia,oh,etc) then eventually there will be no new towns anymore and have difficulty finding themes for future years. I always found it fun to visit towns from previous GT years, but not too many, thats why just No LL. If some LL are allowed and others not I thought that would muck the rules up too much.

Who knows maybe LL will count for something next year Wink

Any place name with either "Saint" (or a variation like St. or STE) or "Sin" counts. Lot's of "Saints" but not so many "Sin" locations, so the "Sins" count for 2 points.

Just throwing it out there...:-)

just scrolling through and saw this. I'm making a note to look into this one. Very interesting.

Had another idea while looking for doubled letters. Every year, or at least the couple of years I've been doing GLMC GTs, there is a restriction against using the same city name two or more times. Welllll, what if in 2015 we go the other way? There are a bunch of Greenvilles, Franklins, Clintons, etc. How about a GT where you MUST get multiples of a name where the points escalate based on the number of times you get a single name? For example, let's say a person decides to get all of the 25 Madisons (according to Wikipedia) in the U.S. You'd get 1 point each for the first 5 Madisons you document, 2 points each for the next 5 Madisons you document, and 3 points each for the rest for a total of 60 possible points if you indeed get them all. You MUST visit at least 2 instances of a city to get any points and you must be able to document that you actually visited those cities in different states. This probably means a lot of Post Office photos as there aren't too many places with the city and state name on the sign. Routing would get interesting if one goes after multiple city strands...

Just another idea...

Have to take scoring into account. Scoring that sounds like a nightmare.

RE: 2014 Grand Tour Theme
I would highly suggest driving the road from Arnold to DuNNing Nebraska on the next GT. The road is actually a race course part of the year.

Go north out of Arnold, Nebraska on N Carroll Street, and it turns into Dunning Road. Keep right at the T intersection a few miles north of town, the road turns into Arnold Dunning Oil. You eventually hit Highway 2 and if you take that north you will end up in Dunning, NE. And remember, don't try to race across this road, there are decreasing radius turns over rises, sand on most of the corners, and sudden direction changes hiding behind crests. It's a very dangerous course unless you know it well.

RE: 2014 Grand Tour Theme
Correctionville . . . .counts for 1 point? 2 points? Or doesn't count at all because of the LL

Duplicate Question
Forgive me if this is a dumb question, this will be my first GT so I'm pleading ignorance.

How many of the following would count as a point or how many are duplicates?

Middletown
New Middletown
West Middletown
Middleton
North Middleton
Middleton Township
South Middleton Township
Middlebury
Middlebury Center

thanks,
Alex

RE: 2014 Grand Tour Theme
Looks like you got 9 different towns to me each worth 1 point.

As far as I'm concerned the only dumb question is "Am I going to have fun riding this grand tour?"
