RE: DS ADV Rally
Farmer has the correct route....or the route I would take.

DS Rally tip of the day

I would suggest having a gps mounted on your bike.

and some spare inner tubes to keep you afloat if it rains. Smile

Seriously you might need them....30% chance of isolated thunderstorms.

2 days till the chaos begins!!!!!!

RE: DS ADV Rally
Finished the sheets for Phase #1 tonight (1 day early). There are 22 locations on it, mostly dirt and 2-tracks roads. Kind of bummed that Farmer can't make it. I'll have extra signup forms Sat morning. Anyone bringing a trailer - if you don't have 4x4 or its a nice car/truck, what size ball on the hitch?

RE: DS ADV Rally
Are you two willing to divulge any details on how the locations are listed?
Will we get GPS coordinates or will we need to follow turn by turn directions?
I'm not sure what the norm is; I am still new to this whole rally thing.

Also, it's looking like the chance for rain is in the 50-75% range.
Not that I trust the forecasters anyway, they seem to change every 3 hours.

RE: DS ADV Rally
I will not give out bonus info for phase 2 until 5-6am Saturday morning (whenever I finish my morning smoke and coffee). But I will say that a GPS or smart phone with a GPS might be helpful. I hear Google maps is pretty snazzy. Big Grin

A computer with Mapping software and email might be the ticket? Smile
(we have wifi)

A Pottawattamie County Map wouldn"t hurt either if you don't have a GPS.

A Thunderstorm is moving thru as I'm typing but don't worry it will be gone by noon and the West looks like it's clearing out so hopefully no rain tomorrow for the rally!!!!!!!! Woohoo

RE: DS ADV Rally
I have both GPS and turn-by-turn instructions on the Phase #1 sheets.... you will probably need the turn-by-turn instructions. The often "approximate" GPS coordinates might help... or not in some places. Paying attention to the turn-by-turn directions will be helpful both during your planning and riding.

The CRF decided it needed a nap during phase 1.

RE: DS ADV Rally
You guys (above) took some great photo, thanks.

Here are my photos. Included are photos of the bonus locations when I was scouting. We have had a lot of rain in the region and after about killing myself at Olive #2 a week ago Saturday after duck walking a little over 2 miles, I had to cheat a little and switch from my V-Strom which was starting to develop clutch issues for a old Ford Explorer. I was surprised that everyone made it through these without getting stuck or falling down... much.

A few things we will think about for next year. We will try to figure out a way to do a buddy system so no one is riding alone. Also, expect many bonuses to have two markers so that you are encouraged to ride the length of certain roads and paths. We will also try to have more alternative bonuses which work when its wet out.

I'll get the ROTY standing posted today.

RE: DS ADV Rally
great pics, looks like a real fun time. Hope timing works for me to ride this next year, and even have my own bike if I give into Rich's peer pressure.

Mike, I know where you can get a KLR650 for cheap.

Just sayin'.

It is an important and popular fact that things are not always what they seem.

RE: DS ADV Rally
What an adventure saturday was. After plotting my morning bonuses I showed my GPS to Frump who said I was nowhere near the planned riding area. Each ride with a GPS I learn a little more. Frump helped me load the propper coordinates and off I went. When the minmum maintanence roads get a little wet they get really slimey, almost like riding on ice.Phase 2 started with a trail ride that noone could confirm or deny as a trail.Bonuses close together on better raods. Good times for sure. The XL performed flawlessly and waited until it got home to start spewing oil from the counter shaft seal. May have been cut by a corn staulk!? Thanks to the Rally Bastards for putting this on.Hope to do it again next year.

No offense, but not a fan of klr's. Also looking for something smaller but I have also been looking at new pickups....

RE: DS ADV Rally
No better reason to buy a new pickup when you know you will need to haul your new dual sport bike. There are quite a few DRZ 400s over on ADV. $2000.00 to 4000.00 for a very capable machine.

It's not a competition, It's a demonstration. "Rowan"

CRF250L . . .great bike, $4k, lots out there for 3k with little miles of use because people get them to learn on and then sell for whatever reason, don't care for it or go to something else

Stayed on paved roads and nursed my bad knee. Got some of the low hanging fruit for the GT.

I knew you'd say that!
next Jack will sell me on a wr250.
I'd like to know where all these $3k bikes are, I haven't seen many.

RE: DS ADV Rally
I got the DS Adv t-shirts ordered over lunch today. I had to order a few extras to get the cost closer to what we charged. If anyone wants extras let me know- $12 to participants or $15 for anyone else. We need to sell about 10 extra to get close to break even. They will be on a hi-quality, soft, dark grey t-shirt. I think we will have them at the BBE for people to pick up.

The design:

PS - We are still working on more GLMC hats, but I don't have a time on those yet.
