RE: 2015 Grand Tour Theme
Simple = better.

Lets try not to overload Mike next fall with special rules or a bunch of special requirements for each photo

I really like this one.
spring lake pARk = one point
bARRon = two points

I like the idea of traveling a little more to find bonuses.

I did some scanning on google maps, they are out there but not plentiful.

It seems like it wouldn't to terrible to score the results. Might have to lower the minimum amount of towns to be a qualified ride and get the t-shirt.

Or, just the "R" one point, "AR" two points "ARR" three points! ARR with a slab of pie 12 points!

Long days in the saddle for few stops is pretty disheartening. The part that made double down such a fun tour is that I could pick up 8 to 12 stops in an afternoon of riding. JMHO

RE: 2015 Grand Tour Theme
To expand on the pirate theme, how about places that begin or end with an "R" or a "C" and doubles would be places that begin and end with the "R" or "C". I haven't looked into the difficulty of this one. There probably won't be many chances for doubles.

Another would be places that have at least 2 words for the name. Sioux City for a point and South Sioux City for 2 points.

Another theme might be a slight twist on Paul Revere's ride: "One if by N; Two if by E" or "One if by N; Two if by C" ; where locations will start and/or end with the N or E in one version and N or C in the second version. Doubles would begin and end with the two letters, much like book ends. One other double option would be 1 point for begin or end with N and two points for begin or end with the E or the C.

I personally would like to spend more time riding to points I can locate on a paper map than looking up potential places on the internet and then finding them with gps coordinates.

I also would find it frustrating to ride all afternoon for a point or two as was stated earlier.

I'm very sorry, but this suggestion seriously offends me and I will have to quit all ties with this club if this were to made a theme..

Do you realize how broke some of us would be by the time this tour would be over??? I can see it now..

Oh!! Gun Shop!! Better get a photo!!

Click..

Well, might as well see if they have any .22 ammo...

Howdy!!

Nope, just passin' through..

Oh, crap.. I've been wanting one of those for years..

How much?? Would you take??? Deal!!

Filling out 4473.. And since I have a 24 hour waiting period, I'll see you tomorrow!

Ride along, suffering empty wallet depression, and joy about getting another gun..

Oh.. Gun Shop!! Better get a photo!!

*******************************************************************

Please do NOT allow this theme to happen..

RE: 2015 Grand Tour Theme
Ahoy! Its talk like a Pirate tour!
Towns with AR, AYE, AHOY, AVAST (good luck on those last two)
Those will be worth 1 point. According to my spreadsheet there are at least 84 towns in Minnesota and 100 in Iowa. I didn't check anywhere else but I'd imagine similar numbers.
The words can be anywhere in the town name as long as not separated by a space, examples:
bARnesville, spring lake pARk, mAYEr are all good for a point

Rules aren't final yet as I'd like to continue the discussion for a bit.
One general change this year is townships don't count separate. I will still accept a township on its own but not both so if you stop at "Barnesville Township" and "Barnesville" you will only get credit for one point.

I was going to bring up the idea of not doing rally flags but obviously we have to this year.

What are your thoughts on the rally flags? Make our own? No flag at all??

I'd rather pay a little more and have flags made every year. I'll volunteer to help make them as well.

I agree and would gladly help make them.

And by the way, the new theme sounds fun..

I know a lot of folks like towels, but I like placards. Would it be possible to let each rider choose?

RE: 2015 Grand Tour Theme
While I'm not one to worry about anyone cheating, if we were to make our own, Mike could proclaim an additional number/shape/etc to write on the card/towel the day or so before the beginning of the tour.

That way we could make them ahead of time and on the weekend before the rally there could be a extra item that has to be added to the towel/card to make it "legal" to use in photos.. I dunno.. Just a thought.. Just trying to make it easy for the rally chairman..

RE: 2015 Grand Tour Theme
Mike, I like the theme! I am a little worried about a weekend (read saturday be home by 4pm) rider will be able to find enough stops to make it worth while.

Maybe we can add more things associated with Pirates.....ship, gold, rum, booty, etc. Just a thought.
